Shamu, a passionate and experienced anaesthetist, was elected as the new Treasurer at the association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the picturesque La Rochelle in Penhalonga, Mutare, from October 24 to 25, 2024. Her election has been met with excitement and optimism, as many members of the ZAA believe her appointment will bring fresh financial leadership, transparency, and strategic direction to the association’s operations.
Dr. Shamu’s appointment to this key position signals a strong step towards ensuring the continued growth and sustainability of the ZAA, particularly as it navigates the challenges and opportunities facing anaesthetists in Zimbabwe. The AGM, which was a resounding success, witnessed not only the election of new leadership but also a series of insightful discussions and workshops aimed at elevating anaesthesia practice in the country.
Dr. Shamu’s Vision for the ZAA’s Financial Growth
One of the key pillars of Dr. Shamu’s leadership will be to enhance financial transparency and accountability within the ZAA. With a rapidly growing membership base, expanding professional development programs, and increasing engagement with international anaesthesia bodies, the financial demands on the association continue to rise. Dr. Shamu’s financial acumen will be instrumental in managing these challenges.
Her immediate priorities as Treasurer include:
- Ensuring Financial Transparency: Dr. Shamu is committed to providing regular financial updates to ZAA members, maintaining a high level of transparency in all financial dealings, and ensuring that every cent is used effectively to benefit the association’s members.
- Strengthening the ZAA’s Financial Foundation: A key part of her vision is to strengthen the financial health of the ZAA, ensuring that the association has the resources it needs to continue offering valuable services to its members. This will involve exploring diverse revenue-generating avenues, securing funding for key initiatives, and managing the association’s resources in a sustainable manner.
- Allocating Resources to Professional Development: Dr. Shamu plans to prioritize the allocation of funds toward expanding professional development programs for anaesthetists across Zimbabwe. This includes organizing more training workshops, conferences, and mentorship opportunities to help anaesthetists improve their skills and stay updated on the latest advancements in the field.
- Expanding ZAA’s Advocacy Efforts: Another priority for Dr. Shamu is ensuring that financial resources are available to support the ZAA’s advocacy work. As the association continues to fight for better working conditions, fair remuneration, and more resources for anaesthetists, a stable financial base will be essential for driving these efforts.
With Dr. Shamu at the helm of the ZAA’s financial operations, the future of anaesthesia care in Zimbabwe is brighter than ever, and the ZAA is well-positioned to continue making meaningful progress in the years to come.
